NMCN: Circular on Minimum Ordinary Level Entry Requirements into Nursing/Midwifery Programmes

Posted on: Sat 30-10-2021

The Council has observed with utmost dismay the practice of some Heads of nursing and midwifery training institutions who have formed the habit of flouting the order of the Council by admitting students with deficient O'level requirements with the hope of making up the deficiencies while in training. The Council frowns at this unwholesome and sub-standard habit.

In view of the above, I hereby convey the approval of the Board of Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria at its sitting on the minimum ordinary level entry requirements into basic or post basic nursing or midwifery programmes in Nigeria in line with national, regional and international standards. The minimum requirement for admission into any nursing programme is five (5) credits in the 0' level examination comprising of Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics and English Language in West African Examination Council (WAEC), National Examination Council (NECO) or National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) in not more than two (2) sittings. A combination of WAEC and NECO is acceptable, while NABTEB and any other acceptable national examination stand alone (cannot be combined with any of the two other examinations). This O'level requirements apply to all categories of nursing and midwifery pfligranutins with effect from 2005 except the community nursing and community midwifery programmes.

Please bring the content of this circular to relevant stakeholders.

Thank you for your support and cooperation in promoting and maintaining standard in nursing and midwifery education and practice in Nigeria in line with global best practice.

Signed:

Faruk Umar Abubakar RN, PhD, FWACN
