Posted on: Wed 13-03-2024

The attention of the Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) Nnewi has been drawn to a post on social media wherein a lady allegedly stated that her deceased sister was mismanaged in our facility. In reaction to the said allegation, the Hospital Management states unequivocally that there is no iota of truth in her statement in the media space rather a futile effort to reduce the hospital's reputation and cajole the management into abandoning the ongoing prosecution of a case of serious assault and grievous bodily harm on our staff. for the purpose of clarification, the deceased was admitted to the Accident and Emergency section of our facility in critical condition on 28th February 2024 after battling illness for over a year with the last five months being particularly challenging.

At this time she had developed gangrene of both feet and involvement of her fingers and also had severe shortness of breath even at rest throughout the course of the illness, she sought alternative care and eventually went to a private facility where she was referred from in a very critical state with multisystem failure. The deceased was diligently managed in a standard and timely manner by our health workers made up of a team of Nurses, Gastroenterologists. Cardiologists, Rheumatologists and Plastic Surgeons. There was no delay at any point in time in Oxygen administration to the patient. Repulsively, Following the patient's demise, her brother assaulted the attending nurse, beating her to a stupor in the process. The assaulted staff got severely injured and currently receiving treatment.

The assailant was promptly arrested, detained by security agencies, and is currently being prosecuted though we acknowledge the father's plea for leniency. It is imperative to emphasize that no amount of social media blackmail, bullying or cajoling will deter the hospital from pursuing this matter to its logical conclusion. The commitment serves not only as justice for the individuals involved but also as a deterrent to others who may contemplate similar actions

The Hospital Management considers her statement misleading, Frivolous Vexatious and libelous. In addition to our dedication to resolving this matter transparently, the hospital will employ legal measures to prosecute the individual who issued the libellous statement to the full extent of the law. NAUTH is resolute in uploading the principles of truth and justice and will spare no effort in protecting our staff from unwarranted assaults and false accusations
