Job Title: Peri-Operative Nurse

Location: Rivers

Role Overview

The Peri-Operative Nurse provides emergency pre-hospital care and patient transport, responding rapidly to medical emergencies.

The role requires advanced clinical skills, the ability to make quick decisions under pressure, and the provision of life-saving interventions

 

Responsibilities

Clinical Support & Execution:

  • Assist in preparing patients for surgical procedures, ensuring required documentation and consent forms are available.
  • Support senior nurses in setting up the operating theatre according to procedure requirements.
  • Assist with positioning patients safely for surgical procedures.
  • Provide basic intraoperative nursing support under supervision
  • Support postoperative patient transfer to the recovery unit.

 

Quality Control & Compliance:

  • Adhere strictly to infection prevention and control guidelines.
  • Assist in conducting preoperative checks of instruments and equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, nursing standards, and theatre protocols.
  • Participate in routine quality improvement activities as assigned.

 

Safety Management:

  • Follow established surgical safety checklist procedures under supervision.
  • Maintain aseptic techniques during procedures.
  • Ensure proper handling and disposal of sharps and medical waste.
  • Immediately report safety concerns, hazards, or incidents to senior staff.

 

Communication & Coordination:

  • Communicate effectively with patients to provide reassurance and basic peri-operative instructions.
  • Support coordination between theatre staff and recovery room personnel.
  • Report changes in patient condition promptly to the supervising nurse.
  • Maintain professional communication within the surgical team.

 

Problem-Identification & Escalation:

  • Observe and report any abnormalities in patient condition.
  • Escalate clinical concerns or equipment issues to senior nurses or surgeons.
  • Support resolution of minor operational challenges within scope of practice.

Documentation & Reporting:

  • Assist in completing peri-operative documentation accurately and timely.
  • Record patient observations as directed by supervising nurse.
  • Ensure all assigned documentation is properly filed and submitted.

 

Risk Awareness & Management:

  • Maintain awareness of peri-operative risks and safety protocols.
  • Seek guidance when unsure of procedures to ensure patient safety.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Registered Nurse (RN) with valid practicing license.
  • Minimum 2 years of clinical nursing experience; 2 years exposure to theatre or surgical settings preferred.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required; familiarity with ACLS is an advantage.
  • Prior internship or rotation in surgical wards or operating theatres is advantageous.
  • Basic understanding of peri-operative nursing principles, sterile techniques, and surgical procedures.
  • Familiarity with patient preparation, monitoring, and recovery processes.
  • Awareness of infection prevention and control standards in a surgical environment.
  • Knowledge of hospital policies, patient safety regulations, and standard nursing protocols.
  • Basic knowledge of surgical instruments, equipment, and theatre setup.
  • Teamwork and collaboration skills in a multidisciplinary surgical environment.
