We are recruiting to fill the position below:
Job Title: Senior Registrar, General Surgery
Location: Abuja
Job Purpose
The Senior Registrar, General Surgery will provide high-quality, patient-centered surgical care under the supervision of Consultant Surgeons.
The role holder will be responsible for the preoperative, operative, and postoperative management of patients, contributing to the clinical and academic excellence of the surgical department.
This is a key training and leadership role, requiring active participation in teaching, research, and the mentorship of junior medical staff.
Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities
Clinical and Surgical Duties:
- Manage a wide range of elective and emergency general surgical conditions, demonstrating a high level of clinical competence and judgment.
- Perform surgical procedures under appropriate supervision, progressing towards independent practice as competencies are achieved.
- Conduct thorough patient assessments, develop treatment plans, and ensure comprehensive postoperative care.
- Participate actively in outpatient clinics, ward rounds, and multidisciplinary team meetings.
Training and Education:
- Actively engage in structured clinical training and educational programs to achieve fellowship and specialist registration requirements.
- Provide supervision, teaching, and mentorship to Junior Registrars, Medical Officers, and House Officers.
- Prepare and present cases at surgical grand rounds, morbidity and mortality meetings, and journal clubs.
Research and Audit:
- Participate in clinical research projects and contribute to scholarly activities, including publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Engage in clinical audit and quality improvement initiatives to enhance patient safety and surgical outcomes.
Administrative and Professional Responsibilities:
- Maintain accurate, timely, and detailed medical records for all patients.
- Ensure compliance with hospital protocols, clinical guidelines, and ethical standards.
- Participate in the on-call rota, providing emergency surgical cover as required.
Qualifications
- Medical degree (MBBS or equivalent) from a recognized institution.
- Full registration with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) or equivalent international licensing body.
Experience:
- Minimum of 4 years of postgraduate surgical training, with significant experience in General Surgery.
- Proven experience in managing emergency surgical presentations and performing a range of general surgical procedures.
- Demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring junior colleagues.
- Evidence of active participation in clinical audit or research is highly desirable.
