Posted on: Thu 16-01-2014

Ipas believes that young midwives are essential to ensuring the reproductive health and welfare of all women. To support young midwives, Ipas is sponsoring a contest for currently enrolled, recently graduated, or practicing midwives 28 years or younger to join our delegation at the 30th Triennial Congress of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM). The Congress, titled Midwives: Improving Women’s Health Globally, will be held in Prague, Czech Republic 1-5 June 2014. Deadline for entry is February 1, 2014.

Contest winners will attend ICM Prague 2014, all expenses paid, and play an essential role in providing a youth perspective at the conference!
ICM Prague 2014 provides an opportunity to share knowledge, network and strengthen midwifery across the world. If chosen to be a member of the Ipas delegation, you will be given a variety of learning and leadership opportunities, such as speaking at information sessions, attending Ipas-sponsored events and representing Ipas at our booth.

About the Contest: The Importance of Midwives in Abortion Care
Access to safe and comprehensive reproductive services is critical to women’s health and well-being, but millions of women around the world have little or no access to safe abortion services. Everyday around the globe midwives save lives. They provide high-quality reproductive health care, including abortion, to women in their communities. The role midwives play in abortion-related care is so important, ICM has named it the seventh essential competency for basic midwifery practice.

ICM ESSENTIAL COMPETENCY #7: “Midwives provide a range of individualised, culturally sensitive abortion-related care services for women requiring or experiencing pregnancy termination or loss that are congruent with applicable laws and regulations and in accord with national protocols.”
