Geneva, Switzerland, 25 April 2016 – The International Council of Nurses (ICN) will convene its 2017 Congress in Barcelona, Spain 27 May – 1 June 2017 with the theme Nurses at the forefront transforming care. This international gathering of thousands of nurses will explore nurses’ leading role in the transformation of care, with a particular focus on universal health coverage, the Sustainable Development Goals and human resources for health.
ICN has attracted a high calibre of speakers to give the keynote and plenary addresses. Three internationally recognised nursing leaders will headline the programme.
Dr Mary Wakefield, Acting Deputy Secretary of U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), will give the keynote presentation on 28 May 2017 on the theme of the conference. Dr Wakefield, Ph.D., R.N., was previously Administrator of the Health Resources and Services Administration; and has held positions as: associate dean for rural health at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of North Dakota; chief of staff to two North Dakota senators; director of the Center for Health Policy, Research and Ethics at George Mason University, Virginia; and worked on site as a consultant to the World Health Organization's Global Programme on AIDS in Geneva, Switzerland.
Dr Leslie Mancuso, PhD, RN, FAAN, President and CEO of Jhpiego, has been selected to give the Virginia Henderson lecture. This invited keynote address began in 1997 in honour of Ms Henderson, an influential nurse, researcher, theorist and author. Built on the theme of the meeting, the Lecture illustrates how Henderson’s work contributes to the theme of Nurses at the forefront transforming care and links to the nursing role in integrated person-centred care. Dr Mancuso, a nurse and American Academy of Nursing Fellow, is a recognized international business leader with a track record of success in bringing accountability and navigating changes in the international nonprofit world. Dr Linda Aiken, PhD, RN, FAAN, FRCN, is the Director of the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research, and The Claire M. Fagin Leadership Professor of Nursing and Professor of Sociology at the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, USA. Aiken is a health services researcher and an authority for causes and consequences of nurse shortages in the U.S. and globally. She will present the plenary session on “Safe Staffing to Transform Care” on 31 May 2017.
The ICN Congress in Barcelona will also provide opportunities for nurses to build relationships and to disseminate nursing knowledge and leadership across specialities, cultures and countries. The official Opening Ceremony, which will include the traditional Parade of ICN Members Associations, the formal presentation of awards, and special entertainment arranged by the Consejo General de Enfermería (CGE), will be held on 27 May 2017.
The Council of National Nursing Association Representatives (CNR), ICN’s global governing body, will also convene in Barcelona just prior to the Congress, from 26-28 May 2017. Congress participants who are members of ICN member associations will be able to observe global nursing leaders identify the profession’s priorities and future directions.
