The National Association of Resident Doctors,NARD,yesterday,took a swipe at the Federal Government for its ineptitude in the control of infectious diseases, causing the return of polio and lassa fever in the country.
The umbrella body of resident doctors also lamented the poor state of some teaching hospitals in the state where consumables like bed sheets, gloves, paper, power generating sets were lacking, which have plunged medical facilities to an abysmal state. The aggrieved executives of NARD disclosed this at the end of the annual general scientific conference held September 5-10 in Enugu.

According to NARD President, Dr. John Onyebueze,”the new cases of poliomyelitis recently recorded as well as the resurgence of lassa fever and other infectious diseases in different parts of the country have further complicated the already poor health indices and indicates that the ineptitude of infectious disease control in Nigeria is regrettable. “We observe the deplorable condition of renumeration of our members in State Tertiary Health Institutions, STHI, with most having to endure many months without salaries while others have been confined to irregular emoluments of varying percentages even in the present arduous economic conditions.
“We frown at the continued exclusion of most of our members from IPPIS platform despite several agreements to integrate them. This has occassioned irregular application of the Personal Income Tax Act,PITA, leading to excessive taxation of some of our members. Cases in point include National Orthopedic Hospital Enugu, AKTH Kano, UUTH Uyo and ISTH Irrua which are currently experiencing industrial disharmony sequel to the above.
“The management of FMC Owerri hereby give an ultimatum that if by the end of September,our members salaries of December 2015 are not paid, we will embark on industrial unrest. This has lingered despite assurances by all parties that they would be paid.
“Despite clear directives from the federal government,some institutions are yet to recommence pension deductions from our members while some others habitually do not remit to the pension fund administrators the deductions made from our members.”
