Posted on: Wed 10-01-2018

At the 42nd General meeting of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria. the issue of research and its utilization among nurses and midwives was presented and deliberated upon exhaustively. The Board noted that most nurses and midwives particularly in the clinical areas are reluctant to participate in Research because of numerous reasons.

The Board at the above meeting gave approval for a comprehensive package that is aimed at promoting research studies. publication and research utilization among nurses and midwives in Nigeria. as follows:

i. Workshop on Research shall be implemented by the Council within the first quarter of 2018, in three centres in Nigeria.

ii. From January 2018, two research-based article publications by nurses and midwives shall be awarded three (3) CEU by the Council. Such nurses would only need one MCPDP to be qualified for renewal of license. Where the officer has many published research articles within three years only two shall be awarded credit units. This is to ensure nurses and midwives still participate in MCPDP.

iii. From January 2018, two slots of 10 minutes each should be created for presentation of a summary of Report of Research work conducted by nurses and midwives during each MCPDP Session. This will provide opportunity for nurses and midwives to learn and improve their knowledge and skills in Research.

iv. The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria Research Journal shall from 2018 be published biannually in April and October. and nurses and midwives should be encouraged to read it and also publish their research studies in this Journal.

v. Nurses and Midwives should form rcscarch groups. This will ensure that those who are conversant with research assist other nurses and midwives to build confidence and join in conducting studies. The nurses in the academia should actively assist those in the clinical areas, to participate in Research.

vi. The National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives (NANNM), Directors of Nursing, State Ministry of Health, Heads of Nursing Services of Teaching Hospitals, Heads of Schools and Coordinators of programmes are requested to encourage and sensitize nurses and midwives on the need to participate in research.

vii. The N&MCN Research Journal shall be made available for purchase by nurses and midwives during each MCPDP by the Council's Representative and in other programmes of the Council to ensures nurses and midwives are given wide exposure to various research works and publications.

Your usual cooperation is highly solicited to ensure the above arrangements and directives are implemented successfully in the entire country.

Thank you.
