The President of Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Pharm. Ahmed I. Yakasa, on Wednesday, 6th December, paid a courtesy call to the Director General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Christianah Adeyeye in Lagos Office.
The President went in company of powerful team of NEC Members, Chairmen of Technical and Interest Groups, Chairman, BOF and Chairmen of some PSN Standing and Adhoc committees.
The president stressed on the need to Create an engagement process to obtain the perspectives of different stakeholders (Manufacturers, Importers, Distributors, Retailers etc.)
Speaking further, Pharm Ahmed Yakasai said in order to prevent distribution and sale of substandard and falsified products post registration surveillance must be heighten. Enforcement directorate of the agency has to be strengthened to effectively and efficiently discharge its activities.
He emphasized on the need to Strengthen the R&R Directorate by adopting the robust regulatory information management system for efficient registration of products to reduce the time it takes to register or renew regulated products, have improved laboratories, Improved survey on quality selected drugs to generate reliable data which is very necessary for an informed decision and to endorse and key into Pharmaceutical Industry IT Platform project.
The president, urged NAFDAC to engage in the Global Funds to utilize available funds for quality assurance and quality control to build the agency. According to him, there is need for more collaboration with National and International Organizations to fight against substandard and falsified products.
“Follow-up and accelerate passage of the revised fake and substandard drugs bill Act at the National Assembly, harmonization of products classification with Nigerian Customs (need to form a committee) e.g. the case of drugs containing vitamins classified as food supplements. “Promoting high level of GMP standards among local manufacturing companies to facilitate the achievement of the goal of National Drug Policy and pushing for medicine security is very important,” Pharm Ahmed Yakasai said.
The president also added that NAFDAC can partner with some organizations to provide technical support to local companies and full implementation of National Drugs Distribution Guidelines (NDDG) – Federal Ministry of Health, NAFDAC, PCN, PSN, PMGMAN, NIROPHARM, and APIN new take off date is 1st January, 2019
