The Radiographers Registration Board of Nigeria (RRBN) has reviewed the country’s Computed Tomography (CT Scan) training curriculum to current international standards, registrar of the board, Mr. Michael S. Okpaleke, has said.
Briefing newsmen on the development, in Abuja, Okpaleke said the review was necessary because of the dynamism in the radiography profession and to reduce capital flight and the money spent by Nigerians on medical tourism abroad.
The registrar said the review would improve the standard of care and practice in the country and stop the rejection of CT scan results from Nigeria by hospitals abroad because they did not meet international standards.
“We harmonised what was in use, reviewed it and also input what is obtainable globally,” he said.
He said CT scan machines are expensive with a 16 slides CT Scan machine, costing N50 million to N100 million, adding that the federal government is working towards providing at least one CT scan in every public hospital in the country using the Public Private Partnership Scheme (PPP).
The registrar also stated that radiation from CT scans could kill which was why only trained and licensed personnel should carry out the procedure to avoid exposing Nigerians to risks like lung cancer.
A radiotherapist and member of the review board, Nwankwo Chris, said the proper use of radiation was beneficial but improper use was very dangerous.
“Every part of the body has its own tolerance level to radiation, so when people are not skilled or trained, they don’t know the tolerance levels nor the extent of what they are doing thereby exposing people to danger,” he said.
