Doctors under the aegis of Association of Resident Doctors, Obafemi Awolowo Teaching Hospital, Ile Ife, Osun State, on Thursday, staged a peaceful protest over the killing of Prof. Jerome Elusiyan. Elusiyan, a professor of Paediatrics, was shot dead in Edo State last Friday. During the protest, the doctors visited the palace of Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, to register their displeasure over the killing of the lecturer.
They also visited the office of the OAU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, and gave him a letter containing their demands addressed to the Minister of Education. They also visited the Chief Medical Director of the OAU Teaching Hospital, Prof. Victor Adetiloye, who was given a letter addressed to the Minister of Health.
Speaking to newsmen during the protest, the Chairman, Association of Residents Doctors, OAUTH chapter, Emmanuel Omoniyi, lamented the gruesome murder of Elusiyan, who he said, was one of 10 professors of Paediatrics Endocrinologists in the country.
Omoniyi said, “It saddened my heart to address you today on the gruesome murder of our teacher and friend of the Association of Resident Doctors, OAUTHC, Prof. Jerome Boluwaji Elutayo Elusiyan. “He was murdered in cold blood while he was returning from Ambrose Ali University on Friday, 13th December, 2019. He went there as an external examiner to supervise their professional examination.
“We are protesting his death because the government has failed in its primary responsibility which is protection of lives and properties of its citizenry. “We demand that justice must be done and the perpetrators should be brought to book. The government should step up its security network.”
