Posted on: Thu 06-07-2017

The Medical consultants under the aegis of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) UPTH have withdrawn their services over the kidnap of one of their colleagues.

In their communique dated July 3rd 2017 and co-signed by the chairman, Dr L.O. Onotai and his secretary, Dr O.B. Braimoh such withdrawal of services took effect as from 0008 hours on Wednesday July 5th 2017.

The consultants are protesting the kidnap of one of their colleagues, Dr Alex Akanni. Remember that many doctors have either been killed or abducted by kidnappers in Rivers state this year.

Their withdrawal of their services is in line with the Rivers NMA new protocol on the kidnap of any medical doctor in the state .

Meanwhile, as was earlier reported, the MDCAN UPTH commenced the withdrawal of non emergency services starting from 8am Wednesday following the house decision MDCAN took on Monday 3rd of July 2017 which is in accordance with the NMA Rivers state Protocol on Kidnap of any doctor.

You will recall that Dr Alex Akani of Family Medicine department was kidnapped in the early hours of Thursday 29th of June 2017. Not only that, we still have another colleague in captivity for several months now. Our colleague in BMSH Dr Mrs Onua was recently killed and those who have suffered from the hands of these hoodlums are too numerous to mention. Let us continue to pray for the unconditional safe release of our colleagues in captivity.
