Job Title: Director of Nursing
Location: Ikeja, Lagos
Reports to: the COO with dotted lines to the Clinical Director.
Role Objective
- The primary purpose of the role of Director of Nursing at the LMC is to provide nursing leadership and organizational administration.
- The responsibilities of the DON include setting patient care standards, establishing processes and protocols for achieving those standards, as well as managing the work of nurses who care for LMC patients.
- As an administrator the DON may not necessarily provide nursing care services directly with patients regularly like other nursing professionals; nonetheless the importance of the role of the DON in patient care is just as significant.
- The DON is expected to often carry out spot checks on the hospital floor to observe, correct, and touch base with patients as part of the monitoring processes to ensure quality care to LMC patients. The DON will be involved in carrying patient care satisfaction survey to assure quality care by nurse to patients.
- Working closely with other members of the management team and the LMCs team of nurses, she/he shall shape the LMCs care practices.
- The DON may sometimes alternate work shifts with others to ensure full coverage for patient care. For training and coaching purposes, the DON shall sometimes provide care directly to patients in the presence of her/his nursing officers/Managers for their learning.
Responsibilities
- Develop, maintain and periodically update: Written policies and procedures that govern the day-to-day functions of the nursing service department.
- Develop methods for coordination of nursing services with other patient services to ensure continuity of the patients total regimen.
- Perform administrative duties such as completing medical reports, evaluations studies.
- Develop, implement and maintain an ongoing quality assurance program for the nursing service department.
- Develop and implementation a nursing service organization structure.
- Determine the staffing needs of the Nursing Services Department necessary to meet the total nursing needs of the patient.
- Recommend the number and level of nursing personnel to be employed.
- Assist HR in the recruitment and selection of nursing services staff.
- Review complaints and grievances made or filed by department staff.
- Make rounds with physicians as necessary and review nurses notes to ensure that they are informative and descriptive of the nursing care being provided and that they reflect the patients response to the care.
- Schedule daily rounds to observe patients and determine if nursing needs are being met.
- Design new employee orientation training materials as required by LMC protocol.
Nursing Leadership:
The DONs leadership responsibilities range from hiring staff to departmental oversight, including but not limited to:
- Formulate policy for the nursing department
- Supervising Nurse Managers/Charge Nurse/Matrons/Snr Nurses
- Hiring new nurses
- Facilitating training opportunities for nurses
- Monitor and manage the work of nurses and their departments
- Overseeing administrative departments, such as transcription and medical records
- Making disciplinary decisions
- Setting team performance standards and KPIs
- Monitoring team performance
- Providing ongoing on-the-job coaching for the nursing department
- Develop innovative strategies in patient care activities.
- Lead, direct and guide other nursing staff in delivering patient care.
- Ensure comfort levels to be at the highest in delivering patient care.
- Ensure proper and effective training to nursing staff in administering patient care.
- Develop and implement high quality and cost-effective health care to patients.
- Coordinate with doctors, administrative and other staff involved in health and patient-care activities.
- Interact with patients and their families to enhance confidence and comfort levels in them.
- Actively participate in hospitals strategic meetings to enhance and improve operational performances.
- Integrate the best practices in nursing patients and delivering health care systems.
- Ensure compliance of facility or hospitals laws and regulations.
Organizational Leadership:
The role of the DON includes efforts with other medical professionals at the LMC to provide organizational leadership including:
- Working with other health care professionals within the facility
- Serving as a liaison between nurses and administrators (Internal and external)
- Maintaining compliance with government and facility regulations
- Recommending strategies for improving care
- Providing guidance regarding the LMC budget
- Promoting the mission of the LMC

Qualification and Experience
- B.Sc in Nursing
- MSN, MPH, DNP or related
- NMCN License
- Minimum of 18 years post qualification experience.
- Previous history of hands-on clinical experience
- Previous and current experience in administrative and leadership roles
- Previous and current experience managing other nurses, shifts, and/or nursing department/activity.
Salary
N850,000 - N1,200,000 monthly.
