The Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria, South-West Zone, has declared an indefinite withdrawal of services by clinical lecturers in universities across the region over the non-payment of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure
In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Dr. AbdulKareem Salawu, and Secretary, Dr. Omotola Obajolowo, MDCAN announced that the strike commenced following the expiration of a 21-day ultimatum on February 2.
The association stated that the industrial action was a result of the failure of relevant authorities to address the salary disparity between clinical lecturers in the South-West and their counterparts in other regions.
“Despite the ultimatum issued on January 13, no progress has been made in addressing this disparity. The failure to implement CONMESS for clinical lecturers in the South-West remains a critical concern.
“After reviewing the situation and considering the lack of response from relevant authorities, we have resolved to commence an indefinite withdrawal of services effective February 3, until the full implementation of the CONMESS salary structure for clinical lecturers in the region.”
MDCAN called on the vice-chancellors of affected universities to urgently address the issue to prevent further disruptions to medical education and healthcare delivery.
The association also emphasised the need for fairness and equity in the remuneration of clinical lecturers nationwide, warning that failure to resolve the matter could have severe consequences for medical training and patient care in the region.
