The University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo State, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the West African College of Surgeons (WACS) to enable resident surgeons from Nigeria and across West Africa to undergo doctoral programmes in the institution.

Speaking after signing the MoU at WACS Permanent Secretariat, Yaba, Lagos, UNIMED Vice Chancellor, Prof. Adesegun Fatusi, said the collaboration would empower the institution to serve as a training ground for doctors undergoing residency training and also conduct research for Ph.D. dissertations.

Fatusi said the programme would reduce the amount of money spent by Nigerians outside the country to obtain doctoral degrees.

The vice chancellor said the opportunity is open to any candidate who wishes to have his or her research projects supervised by the best of professionals and leading researchers within the university and health systems in Nigeria and across West Africa, who are Fellows of the West African College of Surgeons.

According to him, apart from Surgery, the university is also starting Ph.D. programmes in Clinical, Medical and Pathological Sciences effective October 2023, and expressed hope of similar collaborations with relevant national and regional Colleges of Physicians.

In his remarks, WACS President, Prof. Emmanuel Ezomme, said the partnership with UNIMED would benefit both the college and the university.

He said: “We have the resources needed to thrive. Our fellows are scattered all over West Africa, so, when we pull them together, we will be able to help this university run its doctoral programme and our trainees would enroll as part of their residency and benefit from the opportunity.”
