Medical Interns at the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) Teaching Hospital, Uyo, Akwa Ibom state on Monday commenced a weeklong protest over unpaid salaries running into five months.

They carried placards with inscriptions, “100% work. 48% pay. No B juju B that?”, “We are not different from those receiving full salary”, “Even heaven don vex. We deserve our full salary’’, among others.

The medical interns included Pharmacists, Medical Laboratory Scientists, Radiographers, Nurses, Physiotherapists, who are currently undergoing their one year internship program at the hospital.

NAN gathered that “the hospital management has paid only a meagre percentage of the interns’ salaries from January 2021 till date,” one of the protesting interns who spoke on condition of anonymity said.

He added that “the demonstration is to be held for 5 consecutive days from Monday 21st to Friday 25th at the hospital premises.”

He said the management of the hospital has not allowed them to have a body to handle their welfare issue, saying “we don’t have any labour union and the reason being that the management in the past had threatened members of the committee that was set up among the interns”.

Chief Medical Officer of the hospital, Professor Ememabasi Bassey, said efforts are being made to clear the backlog.
