Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the University of Medical Sciences Postgraduate courses leading to the award of M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees for the 2023/2024 academic session.

GENERAL REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL UNIMED POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMMES.

A candidate for postgraduate studies in UNIMED must have obtained 0' Level Credit pass in English Language and Mathematics in addition to three other credits in relevant subjects in WASC, NECO, GCE (ordinary level or their equivalents)

Postgraduate Diploma

  • Candidates must be graduates of the University of Medical Sciences or any other University recognised by the Senate of the University in relevant areas.
  • Holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) with a minimum of Lower Credit in relevant areas from recognised institutions,

Masters Degree

  • Candidates must possess a bachelor's degree in relevant areas from the University of Medical Sciences or other recognized universities with a minimum of Second-Class Honours.
  • Candidates with Third Class Honours Degree or HND (in relevant areas) with an appropriate Postgraduate Diploma from any offer recognised Institutions with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5-point scale (or at least Upper Credit in the Post-graduate Diploma). In addition, the holders of AND, PGD/PGOE certificates should satisfy the basic School Certificate or GCE Ordinary Lovel entry requirements credit in five relevant subjects for admission into Bachelor's Degree programmes of the respective Departments.

Doctor of Philosophy Degree

Holders of Master's Degree from any University recognised by the Senate of the University with a minimum weighted average of 6O%. interested candidates shall complete the application form on the University portal and provide all relevant documents as specified on the application form, including certificates of degrees and/or diplomas, academic transcripts, three (3) reference letters, and a 500-words statement of intent in the proposed research area. Candidates who are Nigeria citizens shall, in addition, provide the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge, exemption or exclusion certificate. Each candidate shall request and ensure that the institution(s) attended process and forward official academic transcript(s) directly to the Secretary, Postgraduate School, Only candidates whose transcripts are received will be considered for admission. Admission Requirements for the Programmes

PG. Cert. in Health Professions and Biomedical Education (Part-Time, Virtual)

The programme is opened to candidates who possess a National Diploma, Higher National Diploma or Bachelor degree in any Health, Allied and Health related disciplines from a university recognized by the Senate of the University.

Postgraduate Diploma in Health Professions and Biomedical Education (Part-Time, Virtual)

The programme is opened to candidates who possess a National Diploma, Higher National Diploma or Bachelor degree in any Health, Allied and Health related disciplines from a University recognized by the Senate of the University.

Admission is also opened to applicants with any of the above qualifications and who has a PG. Cert. in Health Professions and Biomedical Education of UNIMED or its equivalent recognized by the university. Such applicants will be exempted from first semester courses.

M.Sc. in Health Professions and Biomedical Education (Part-Time, Virtual)

The programme is opened to candidates who possess a Bachelor degree (minimum of 22) in any Health, Allied and Health related disciplines from a University recognised by the Senate of the University.

Admission is also opened to applicants with any of the above qualifications and who has a PG. Dip. in Health Professions and Biomedical Education of UNIMED or its equivalent recognized by the University. Such applicants will be exempted from course work of first and second semesters.

INSTITUTE OF ADVANCED CLINICAL SCIENCES EDUCATION

MSc in HEALTH LAW AND POLICY

The programme is designed to:

  • Enhance the knowledge and competencies of health professionals, service managers and legal practitioners wishing to explore career paths pertinent to the discipline of Health Law and Policy.
  • Enhance knowledge in the field, with emphasis on international best practice in national and global Health Law.
  • Nurture research and innovation in Health Law and Policy in Nigerian academia.

Graduates of the programme will be expected to:

  • Have knowledge of contemporary issues and recent advances in Health Law and Policy.
  • Deploy this knowledge to inform the formulation, implementation and monitoring of health policy and health services delivery.
  • Be able to facilitate the development of legal frameworks underpinning clinical practice.

The programme comprises a wide range of courses to be delivered over one calendar year. Taught courses will be conducted over two semesters, then students will have 3 months to work on and submit a dissertation. Hybrid instruction will be through a combination of virtual and face-to-face interactions. Online teaching and learning through the University’s e- learning resources will be complemented by face-to-face teaching/examination over one week per semester. Each student shall make two seminar presentations.

Admission requirements

  • Applicants for admission into the Master’s degree programme shall possess:
  • A first degree in Medicine, Dentistry, Law or any other discipline in the Health Sciences and Social Sciences (MBBS, BDS, LLB, B.Sc 2:2 or higher) or
  • A registrable professional qualification and a minimum of two years’ post-qualification field experience; or
  • Any other qualification deemed equivalent and acceptable by the Board of the Postgraduate School and approved by the University Senate.

MSc/PhD Programme in Medical Sciences, Surgical Sciences, Pathology Sciences, and Dental Sciences

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) course leading to the award of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Clinical/Surgical/ Dental/Pathology Sciences, commencing in the 2023/24 academic year. UNIMED is a young, dynamic, and forward-looking institution specialized in the education of health sector personnel.

About the degree programme

  1. The purpose of this programme is to produce medical scientists who are able to conduct high-level research, translate scientific discoveries into medical advances, and respond to emerging challenges in medical/dental education.
  2. It is targeted at the following clinicians wishing to pursue an academic career:
  3. Medical residents undergoing specialist residency training in tertiary health institutions.
  4. Medical Fellows employed in tertiary health institutions as Hospital Consultants;
  5. Medical Fellows who are academic staff of medical schools in their universities; they participate in teaching ad supervising undergraduate and postgraduate students;
  6. Medical doctors in sub-Saharan African countries, such as in the East and Central Africa region, who wish to pursue a Doctorate programme in clinical medicine and dentistry.

The programme, conducted by the Institute of Advanced Clinical Sciences Education, has a strong focus on building research skills and also on methodology of teaching and learning in clinical medicine and dentistry, while also strengthening the base for evidence-based clinical practice. It complements the specialist training carried out by the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African Postgraduate Medical College.

Admission requirements

Applicants for admission into the programme shall possess:

MBBS/BDS + MSc

or

MBBS/BDS + Part 1 Qualification (West African or National PG College)

or

MBBS/BDS + Fellowship Qualification (West African or National PG College)

In addition to the professional qualifications above, applicants must be fully registered to practice by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria and hold a valid annual license to practice. Applicants may be admitted with MBBS only, with the proviso that they must complete the MSc program in the relevant discipline in the department or complete and pass the Part I/Membership before they can proceed with the PhD work.

The duration of the programme will be 3 years for applicants with (a) or (b) above and 2 years for those with (c). At the outset, applicants will elect to pursue either PhD by thesis or PhD by publication. Further details of the programme are available on request.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Candidates for admission into the higher degree programmes in the School of Public Health shall normally be graduates of UNIMED or other Universities/Institutions recognized by Senate. Admission shall be made by the Postgraduate School on the recommendation of the appropriate Postgraduate Committees at Departmental and Faculty levels.

Admission criteria is Bachelor degree in any discipline, with a minimum of Third (3rd) Class or Higher National Diploma (with a minimum of lower credit) or its equivalent. A credit pass in Biology/Agric Science/Animal Husbandry/Health Science should be among the subject combinations at O level, for non-health related background candidates.

Masters Degrees (One calendar year)

Master in Public Health (MPH), with specialization in one of the following options:

MPhil/PhD programmes (One calendar year)

These programmes are for eligible holders of academic MPH MSc and related degrees with 50-59.9 % aggregate score; or holders of the Part I of the Fellowship of the National Postgraduate Medical College or West African College of Physicians in Public / Community Health. All MPhil/PhD candidates will be assessed on their merit.

Doctoral programmes with specializations (Three calendar years)

These programmes are for eligible and relevant holders of MPH/MSc Public Health or related Degree with PhD grade, assessed on their own merit. Part II Fellows of the National Postgraduate Medical College or West African College of Physicians in Public/Community Health may be admitted into the 2 years (six semesters) programme of the Doctoral programmes by Thesis. Non Community Health Fellows and Post Part I Public/Community Health residents (with academic MPH/M.Sc.PH) may be exempted from selected course-works based on their prior fellowship training and specialty. The DrPH degree is for top professionally and clinically qualified (Medical and Nursing) graduates with an MPH or MPhil Degree with PhD grade, and assessed on their own merit. PhD candidates who finished secondary school on or before 1993 will have their O level results assessed on its own merit

An applicant for admission into the M.Sc. degree programme shall be a graduate of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) Ondo, or any other approved University recognized by the UNIMED Senate, and with a B.Sc. (Hons) degree in Anatomy, or Medical/Clinical/Allied Health Sciences.

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil. & M.Phil./PhD)

An applicant for admission to Master of Philosophy must be a holder of Master of Science degree in Anatomy with a weighted average of 50-59.9%. Candidates that are not UNIMED graduates may be required to satisfy the Department’s requirement for admission via an interview/examination or both.

Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D)

Applicants for this programme should be:  

  • Holders of Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree with a research thesis in any of the areas of specialization stated above.
  • Holders of a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Anatomy with a minimum weighted average of 60%.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PROGRAMMES

Candidate must have at least a first degree in BMLS or MBBS obtained from UNIMED and any other recognized Universities. Holders of BSc degrees in Microbiology, Public Health, Biology, Environmental Health Science, and Community Health Science are also eligible to apply. The minimum qualification is a second-class lower degree.

Course Duration:

1. Minimum of three (3) Semesters (18 months) for a full-time M.Sc. program, Maximum period is six (6) Semesters.

2. Minimum of six (6) Semesters in three academic years for a full-time Ph.D. program, Maximum period is 4 academic years.

All candidates must possess at least 5 O’level credits including English language, Mathematics, Biology or Health Science, Chemistry, and Physics at not more than 2 sittings.

Master of Science (M.Sc.)

An applicant for admission into the M.Sc. degree program shall be a graduate of the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED) Ondo or any other approved University recognized by the UNIMED Senate, and with a minimum of Second Class (Lower Division) in the relevant discipline. Candidates with Third Class Bachelor’s degree or HND (Upper Credit) who in addition, possess a Postgraduate diploma (PGD) with a minimum CGPA of 3.50 on a 5.00 scale in a relevant discipline may be considered. FACULTY OF MEDICAL REHABILITATION

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSIOTHERAPY

Master of Science degree programme in Physiotherapy (Physiotherapy)

Admission requirements

i. An applicant for admission into the M.Sc. (Physiotherapy) should have at least a Bachelor’s degree (Second Class Lower Division) or its equivalent in Physical Therapy or Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) from a recognized University.

ii. The applicant should have had at least two years post-qualification clinical experience after the Bachelor Degree before embarking on the M.Sc. programme.

iii. The Candidate should be fully registered with Nigeria Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board and must possess a current license of the Board.

iv. The duration of the M.Sc. degree shall be a minimum of 18 months

Doctor of Philosophy in Physiotherapy (Ph.D. (Physiotherapy))

Admission requirements

(i) Candidates for admission to the Ph.D (P.T) programme must have successfully completed the M.Sc. (P.T) degree with an average of 60% may be admitted directly to the Ph.D. (P.T) programme.

(ii) Candidates who hold a Master’s degree from a recognized University adjudged to be equivalent to the M.Sc. (P.T) degree (with an average of 60%) may be admitted directly to the Ph.D (P.T) programme

(iii) Candidate should be fully registered with Nigeria Medical Rehabilitation Board and must possess a current license of the Board.

(iv) A minimum of four (4) semesters of full-time study is required.

(v) All candidates must pass a qualifying examination as specified in the University regulations

iii. Click on PAYMENT to make payment via online payment system using VISA or MASTER card. Note that VERVE card is not allowed.

iv. After payment, print payment receipt

v. Click on APPLICATION FORM with your payment Transaction ID to complete the form.
