To tackle prevailing health challenges including kidney failure, malaria and other tropical diseases, the Yobe State University, with the support of the state government and international partners has built an ultramodern Biomedical Science Research and
Training Centre (BioRTC) at the state university, Damaturu.
‘The State Commissioner for Higher Education, — Prof. Muhammad Bello Kawuwa, told newsmen in Damaturu yesterday that Governor Mai Mala Buni’s commitment to improving public health and advancing scientific Research helped provide a policy basis for the centre.
He said the centre, equipped with the state-of-the-art equipment, was established in collaboration with global experts and partners and had positioned Yobe to better address pressing health concerns like chronic kidney disease, among others.
The research centre is a clear indication and testimony that Gov, Mai Mala Buni remains committed to changing the narrative as far public health is concerned in addition to advancing the frontiers of science and technology.
“Here, | am talking about the best research that involves medical science and technology especially those that require assembling the global best brains and equipment to conduct research for local, national, international application in a particular lab,” Prof. Kawuwa said.
‘The vice chancellor of the university, Prof. Mala Daura, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Services, Prof. Muhammad Musa Lawan, said the BioR'TC lab was highly equipped with the support of the state government and many institutions from across the globe.
According to him, the centre is currently working on diseases such as malaria, chronic kidney, dementia, among others. Daura also emphasized the BioRTC’s role in fostering international collaboration.
“The centre also organizes workshops and summer schools with facililators from around the world such as from Japan, the UK Germany, Spain, Senegal, etc who come here with the support of the state government,” he noted.
He said the establishment of the centre marked a significant step for Yobe in the pursuit of scientific and medical breakthroughs.
Also, the founder and director of the centre, Dr Mahmud Bukar Maina, who spoke to journalists from the UK via a video link, said the newly established the BioRTC was equipped with cutting-edge technology that had the potential to address critical public health issues and would contribute meaningfully to the field of biomedical research.
