About 300 women and men in Abuja metropolis were screened for cervical, breast, prostrate cancer and hepatitis B screening in an exercise organised by the Gynae Care Research and Cancer Foundation, an Abuja based NGO, as part of its activities to mark the 2017 world cancer day.
Activities marking the week-long event includ, awareness creation and free screening for corp members and staff, sensitizing to secondary schools on dangers of HPV and will climax with free medical screening for members of the public at the foundation’s headquarters.
Prior to this, radio jingles were carried out to invite the public for the event. Women had free cervical screening, free breast examinations, free hepatitis screening; while men had free prostate screening and hepatitis screening.
World cancer day is marked in February every year to raise awareness about cancers.

Dr. Onwufor Uche, a consultant gynaecologist and Executive executive director of gynae care foundation noted that every year 100,000 Nigerians develop cancers, hence the need for awareness and screening for early detection and treatment. “We picked up several cases of precancer of the cervix, several breast lumps and cases of hepatitis B infection,” he said.
He said over 90 per cent of those who came for screening were doing so for the first time noting that the NGO would follow-up on positive cases and those with hepatitis B infection had been referred to hospitals for treatment.
