Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria NEC Communique

The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) National Executive council (NEC) meeting was held from 28th to 31st January 2016 at owerri, Imo state Nigeria. The theme of the conference was "Quest for Excelence in Health care delivery in Nigera: The role of training and Re-training" with sub theme "Lassa Fever and other haemorrhagic Fevers"
 
Reports by a medicalworldnigeria.com correspondent showed that the opening ceremony was chaired by professor Ndu Eke, interim medical director of the federal medical centre, owerri, who also declared the event open. The guest lecture on the thme was delivered by professor S C Ohaegbulem (a renowed Neuro surgeon) while Dr Nwolisa Emeka delivered a lecture on the sub theme.
 
The NEC meeting which was attended by over a hundred delegates from different MDCAN Branches across the country deliberated extensively on various national health issues including the lassa fever epidemic as well as welfare of her members.
 
Thus, NEC noted and commended:
- The efforts being made by the federal and state governments to rapidly contain the lassa fever epidemic which has resulted int he unfortunate death of many citizens of the country.
- The federal government on steps being taken to address the welfae issues concerning medical doctors including consultants.
- The steps taken by the federal ministry of health to restore industrial peace to the federal medical centre owerri by appointing an interim managment committee.
 
RESOLUTIONS:
Following detailed and in-depth review of the issues, NEC then resolved as follows:
1. That federal and state governments should intensify their efforts to quickly contain the lassa fever scourge currently ravaging the country by emphasizing on improved public sanitation practice, strengthening of health systems and forging collaborations with relevant statkeholders including MDCAN.
2. That the MDCAN is willing and ready to work with relevant agencies to quickly bring this scourge of lassa fever in Nigeria under control.
3. That the federal government should reactivate the foreign training scheme for medical specialists in Nigeria inorder to improve our health care delivery systems
4. That the federeal and state governments should promptly attend to pending welfare issues concerning medical doctors including consultants to ensure that industrial peace in the health sector is maintained.
5. That MDCAN should complement the federal governemnt's effort at resolving the lingering crisis at FMC owerri by constituting a peace and reconciliation committee to promote interaction and collaboration as a foundation for reconciliation among members of MDCAN in the hospital
