Entry Point for Medical Laboratory Scientists in Nigeria Universities

The attention of Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) has been drawn to wrong terminologies and wrong entry points for medical laboratory scientists in Nigeria universities.

MLSCN wishes to state unequivocally that the entry point for the appointment of medical laboratory scientists in the service of universities should be in line the Federal Government of Nigeria approve entry point of GL 10 (CONHESS 9) Post – NYSC as clearly spelt in circular no. HSCF/EIR/END/S. 100 OF 11st June, 2015 which take into cognizance the duration of training for the medical laboratory scientists being seven years comprising five (5) undergraduate training, one (1) year mandatory internship and one (1) National Youth Service.

Invariably, what this connotes is that:

  1. The entry point for entering into service for academic medical laboratory scientists with BMLS degree and licensure by MLSCN is assistant lecturer (UASS 2 = GL 10).
  2. The entry point for entering into service for academic medical laboratory scientists with MSc degree and licensure by MLSCN is lecturer II (UASS 3).
  3. The entry point for entering into service for academic medical laboratory scientists with PhD degree and licensure by MLSCN is 1 (UASS 4).
  4. The entry point for entering into service for non-academic medical laboratory scientists is CONUASS 9 (GL 10) which runs up to Director of Medical Laboratory Services (CONUASS 15) in line with Federal Government of Nigeria 2001 Approved Scheme of services.

It is hereby emphasized that medical laboratory scientist must produce evidence registration by the medical laboratory science council of Nigeria and current license to practice before being employed as such.
