The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Anambra State chapter, on Saturday, decried the influx of quacks in drug manufacturing industries in the country.

The association also condemned what it called chaotic drug distribution and unlicensed premises in the state, adding that those found wanting should be jailed.

The state Chairman of PSN, Mr. Patrick Obi, stated this in Awka, the state capital, while briefing journalists on the 2017 World Pharmacy Day, with the theme, “From research to health care; your pharmacist is at your service.”

The PSN enjoined governments at all levels to put measures in place in order to curb unwholesome practices which it said had led to the loss of lives.

The group said it had begun health awareness campaigns in the state to address some of these issues.

Obi said, “The PSN uses this opportunity to remind everybody to always ask a credible pharmacist whenever they need information on drug-related matters.

“We also call on the government to partner with the pharmacists in the areas of policy and public health, to reduce the burden of diseases on Anambra residents through support for immunizations, health education, and promotion. We also call for the enabling environment and funds to the pharmacists to access world-class referral centres on drug information services and pharmacies.”
