An aspect of health care provision raising concerns among stakeholders is counterfeit drugs which have been blamed for high mortality in the country.
Determined to curb the danger it poses to health, pharmacists under the auspices of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, PSN, have stepped up activities to ensure that registered premises only sell and dispense drugs in the country.
Also, the PSN has called on the Federal Government through relevant agencies – the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria, PCN and the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, to enforce all pharmacy and drug laws in the months ahead.

To this end, President of PSN, Dr. Ahmed I.Yakasai has called on pharmacists and pharmaceutical companies to key into the programme which is aimed to ensure that tenets of Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) are entrenched for consumers of health in Nigeria. According to the president, the PSN said it has “concluded with the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) to facilitate a smooth registration season in 2017. “This is particularly key to achieving a faster pace of licensure of practitioners and pharmacy facilities.”
He said pharmacists and pharmaceutical companies would regularise their membership of PSN after which they would be issued clearance certificates by the respective state branches. Regularisation of membership would include the payment of a compulsory building fee of N5, 000 in line with resolution of the National Council of PSN.
While urging registered pharmacists to continue to set noble standards Yakassai urged all to heed the call by getting to register so as to avoid embarrassment. “Any pharmacist who fails to pay the practicing fee commits an offence,” he said, adding that such a member or organisation was liable on conviction.”
