The president of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Mr. Ahmed Yakasai, has called for the reconstitution of the Boards of the National Agency For Foods Drugs and Administration and Control, the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria and the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Research and Development.

Speaking at the opening of the 89th Annual National Conference of the PSN, Yakassai said that the delay in re-establishing the board could compromise the fight against fake medicines.

According to him, the boards of these agencies take decisions and regulate pharmaceutical practices in the country.

The PSN boss, who commended the approval of the Pharm. D Programme by the National Universities Commission, noted that the approval could pave the way for  improved pharmacy practices.

The senior vice president, FCMB Retail Banking, Olu Akanmu, urged the Federal Government to address the increasing cost of essential medicines in the country.

According to him, the Nigerian pharmaceutical industry is import-dependent, from raw materials to finished products, and the high exchange rate has affected the cost of drugs.

Akanmu stated, “This is a rallying cry to the Federal Government for some form of preferential treatment for pharmaceutical imports, given the public health implications. Pharmaceutical companies are unable to source foreign exchange for their raw materials. On the demand side, it implies expensive medicines for the Nigerians.”
