WACS Faculty of Surgery to Stop Offering Part 1 Examinations Effective October 2017

Posted on: Tue 18-07-2017

Effective from October 2017, the Faculty of surgery will stop offering Part I examinations. In its place, the Faculty now conducts Membership examinations. The Membership examination differs from the old Part I examination in two areas:

(a) There is a compulsory requirement for 3 months rural surgery rotation for candidates to be eligible.
(b) The operation log requirement for the membership examination is higher than that required for Part I examination. Membership candidates must clock 150% of the
operation log book requirement of Part I candidates before they can sit for the Membership examination. Refer to the log book specifications in the curriculum for the
exact numbers.

2. Three months rural surgery rotation is mandatory before any candidate can sit for the Membership exams in surgery.

3. With effect from October 2017, Basic Surgical Skill course will be a mandatory course before candidates are allowed to sit the Membership examination.

4. The Faculty of Surgery will be introducing OSCE in her Membership examination very soon. In preparation for the OSCE examination, there will be training of candidates for the OSCE format of the exams during the forth coming integrated revision course in surgery which will be conducted at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Ilorin, Kwara State in September 2017.

Another training will also be conducted for candidates in Accra between August 2017 and February 2018. All candidates who wish to sit the membership exams in 2018 are advised to make use of these opportunities to get proper orientation on the nature of our OSCE examination.
