The meeting took place at KIM ROYAL HOTEL and Suites, Asaba, Delta State from 21^st to 24^th May, 2017 with forty two delegates in attendance.  The theme of the meeting was:- “Hospital Pharmacy: Global Best Practices” under the distinguished Chairmanship of Dr. (Chief) Dennis M. C. Amafor, Chief Executive and Managing Director of Helt Hospitale Ltd, with the keynote address delivered by Pharm. (Dr.) Magdalene Oke of Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH) Oghara.  The Executive Governor of Delta State, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi A. Okowa was represented by the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Nicholas Azinge who declared the Conference open.

Ø  The meeting deliberated on issues as it affects the profession and resolved as follows:

Ø  The meeting advocated for global best practices in all pharmacies and the need for professional collaboration, reforms, computerization and patient safety.

Ø  On internship training for fresh pharmacy graduates, the meeting noted the increasing difficulty in getting placement for the one year mandatory training  and called on the Government to as a matter of urgency create a central pool of funds through the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria to make placement easily accessible as is the case with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Ø  The meeting noted the innovative efforts of the Registrar of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, with the online registration for annual licence.

Ø  The meeting also noted the ongoing review of Pharmacy Laws and commended the efforts of the pharmacists Council of Nigeria in this regard, and called for a speedy completion of the process.

Ø  The meeting stressed the need for uniformity in the Inspections Committee and Standardization of the requirements for accreditation of institutions to make Hospital Pharmacy practice perform at optimal levels to the benefit of the teeming population of patients.

Ø  It was also suggested that E-pharmacy Management Information System should be instituted and made mandatory in all health institutions.

Ø  The meeting noted the continuous decapitalisation of the Drug Revolving Funds (DRF) in various hospitals which negates the objectives of the DRF scheme and the National Drug Policy and calls on the Federal Ministry of Health to call a “stakeholders” meeting to address the issue.

Ø  The meeting noted with dismay, the non-payment for Pharmaceuticals dispensed to the  National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) enrollees, thus further decapitalising the Drug Revolving Fund Scheme and solicits for prompt payment.

Ø  The need for prompt price review of NHIS drugs was also canvassed in line with the current realities in the country. 

Ø  In line with the Executive Order recently issued by the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Meeting expressed the willingness of member institutions to comply fully by giving priority patronage to Nigerian Pharmaceutical manufacturing companies.

Ø  The meeting expressed her dissatisfaction with the running of Pharmacy Technology Course by some Polytechnics without the approval of the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria and called on the Council to urgently look into the issue.

Ø  The meeting called on the office of Head of Service of the Federation to expedite action on the release of the circular on the approved Consultancy Cadre for Pharmacists in Nigeria.

Ø  In conclusion, the meeting calls on the relevant Government agencies:-Office of the Head of Service of the Federation, Federal Ministry of Health and Pharmacists Council of Nigeria to critically look at the issues raised with a view to proffering solutions that would ensure global best practice in our Hospital Pharmacies.

Ø  The members of the Nigerian Police Force, the SSS, Nigerian Security and Defence Corps and other security outfits that provided water tight security during our stay are highly appreciated.

Ø  The Chief Medical Director and Management of Federal Medical Centre, Asaba are highly appreciated for their marvelous support to COMPHFHI, financially and morally to bring this year’s meeting to a successful conclusion.
