PREAMBLE: The meeting held from 2nd to 4th December 2013 at Chelsea hotel abuja was attended by chief medical directors and medical directors of federal tertiary hospitals across the nation. Also present at the meeting were top officials of federal ministry of health led by the director of hospital services, Dr patience osinubi. The meeting deliberated on matters related to the tertitary hospitals and the health of the nation. The committee commends the honourable minister of health prof. Christian Chukwu for the successful retreat involving the chairmen of boards, chief executives and heads of administratio of federal tertiary health insititutions and agencies in nigeria with senior officials of the federal ministry of health

OBSERVATIONS AND RESOLUTIONS:

1) The committee observed that the national health bill has suffered another setback and called on the national assembly to expedite action on the passage of the bill to stabilize the health care delivery system of the country.

2) Members expressed concern about the spate of medical tourism to other countries. Institutions were urged to create awareness of specialized services they offer, like kidney transplan, joint replacement surgeries, endoscopic surgeries etc to enable members of the public take advantage of the availability of such services in Nigeria.

3) The committee decried the incessant strike action that has characterized the health sector and recommends the adoption of dialogue as a strategy for conflict resolution.

4) The committee commends mr president, Dr goodluck jonathan for setting up the committee on inter professional harmony in the health sector and expressed concern over the delay in completing the assignment. The committee urges the panel to expedite action on this very important assignment.

The committee received in audience the country director of centre for disease control who raised issues related to the sustainablity of HIV/AIDS program in nigeria. Government is urged to take full ownership of the programm

CONCLUSION:

The committee urges all its members to continue to strive to sustain healthcare delivery in spite of all odds
