The strike over remuneration and other demands, that was suspended by the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) on March 2, will be kick-started again soon. This is contained in a communiqué issued by the National Union of Allied Health Professionals (NUAHP) at the at the end of the meeting held in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State from March 23 to 25.

According to the communiqué signed by the National President of NUAHP, Felix Faniran and the association’s General Secretary, Obinna Ogbonna, it was therefore agreed that “NUAHP should liaise with other JOHESU leaders to mount pressure on the government to meet our demands immediately after the general elections by releasing all the relevant circulars by the government.” Simirlay, they stated that The NEC empowered the NAC to put the government on notice (that is, give an ultimatum of 15 to 21 days) that will expire shortly at the end of the presidential elections.

Although, they commended the elevation of the erstwhile Minister of State, Dr. Khaliru Alhassan as new Minister of Health, they lamented the appointment an engineer as a new minister of state. While the Union welcomes the new Minister of State, an Engineer by profession, it disagreed with President Goodluck Jonathan’s action in ignoring the incessant call to balance the appointment of members of the Nigherian Medical Association (NMA) with members of the Allied Health professional.

To this end, NUAHP therefore called for a revisit of these issues after the presidential election. Meanwhile, JOHESU had written a letter of reminder to Jonathan over the pending issues for over two weeks now, the duo added. Concerning the National Delegates Conference (NDC) of the union scheduled to hold between May 5 and 8, 2015 at Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Dr. Akinkuade Fredrick, the 1st National General Secretary of the Union, Alhaji Salawu (former executive member of the Union), Col. Emechete (retired) and the two Administrative Secretaries of the Union would serve as the electoral committee members for the elections.
