Women living with HIV face unique challenges and human rights violations related to their sexuality and reproduction within their families and communities, as well as from the health-care institutions where they seek care. In response to requests for guidance specific to the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women living with HIV, this guideline has been developed with meaningful community engagement, a broad consultative process and review of current evidence and existing guidelines. It also includes new recommendations and good practice statements placing particular emphasis on the creation of an enabling environment to support more effective health interventions and better health outcomes.

 

Following the global launch of the Guideline, WHO is undertaking several steps to disseminate the guideline – in particular with WHO Regional and Country Offices, Ministries of Health, programme managers, health care providers, professional associations, community of women living with HIV, and implementers.

Manjulaa Narasimhan 

Scientist, WHO Department of Reproductive Health and Research

Manjulaa Narasimhan coordinates WHO's work on strengthening linkages between sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and HIV interventions – at advocacy, policy, programmatic and research levels. This includes the development of WHO global guidance and tools on the SRHR for women living with HIV as well as the SRHR of adolescent girls and young women at risk of HIV. She co-convenes the interagency working group on SRHR/HIV linkages.

 

Rita Wahab

Coordinator, MENA Rosa

Rita Wahab, from Lebanon, has been a women living with HIV activist since 1995. Rita co-founded a local association of people living with and affected by HIV, Vivre Positif, in 2007. She assisted in designing and translating How to be a Positive Trainer training curriculum for other people living with HIV in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. She is the Coordinator for MENA Rosa (a group of women living with HIV in MENA) since 2010, and works to enhance the quality of life for women living with HIV and their dependants.

 

Elham Atalla

Bahrain Ministry of Health

Dr Elham, MD, MSexol, works at the Ministry of Health, Bahrain. Dr Elham is a Consultant Family Physician, and the first Clinical Sexologist in Bahrain. She is a recognized pioneer in treating patients with sexual dysfunctions from Bahrain and around the Gulf area, and is currently running a specialized clinic, the first of its type in Bahrain, for sexual disorders. In addition to her mission to help as many women and men as possible with their sexual concerns, with the utmost confidence and privacy, Dr. Elham is interested in promoting sexual health education for both professionals and the public

 

Naqibullah Hamdard

Director of the National AIDS and Hepatitis Control, Afghanistan Ministry of Health

Dr Naqibullah Hamdard is a medical doctor and field epidemiologist, graduated from Avicenna medical faculty and completed his MSc. in International Health from Heidelberg University in Germany. He is fellow of Field Epidemiology Training Program-FETP and Nutrition of people living with HIV & AIDS from CDC Atlanta and Wageningen University in Netherlands. He has 14 years of experience in public health research, leadership and management. 

 

Karima Gholbzouri

Medical Officer, WHO/EMRO

Dr Karima Gholbzouri is a Medical Officer on reproductive and maternal health at the WHO Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office. She has an international expertise in sexual, reproductive and maternal health strategic planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation with generation of knowledge based on the scientific evidence. She also contributes with WHO/HQ team to the development of reproductive and maternal health guidelines and recommendations. She provides technical support to the national authorities to ensure the dissemination, adaptation and adoption of the WHO guidelines and recommendations. 

 

Joumana Hermez

Technical Officer, WHO/EMRO

Joumana Hermez has a background education in medical laboratory followed by a Masters in Public Health. She worked in various settings in Lebanon including hospital, NGO and ministry of health, and has broad experience with designing, managing and implementing HIV prevention services for key populations. Since 2003, working at the Eastern Mediterranean Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO/EMRO) as a Technical Officer at the HIV, Hepatitis and Sexually Transmitted Diseases Unit, responsible for HIV and hepatitis testing and prevention, as well as civil society mobilization.
