COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF THE 27^TH ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING AND SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE OF OTORHINOLARYNGOLOGICAL SOCIETY OF NIGERIA (ORLSON) ON 22^ND NOVEMBER, 2019 AT SHERATON HOTEL, IKEJA, LAGOS STATE

The Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference held at Sheraton hotel, Ikeja, Lagos State, where the impact of environmental pollution on Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Health was discussed. The theme of this year’s annual general meeting was “Impact of environmental pollution on Oto-Rhino-Laryngological Health’ with subthemes:

1. Environment and Airway Diseases

2. Brain Drain and its impact on ORL practice in Nigeria

3. Update on Cochlear implant in Nigeria

The Otorhinolaryngological society of Nigeria (ORLSON) organizes annual scientific conference to appraise the state of its practice in Nigeria and discuss topical issues as they relate to the health of the Nigerian nation. The quest for standardizing the practice of ORL and overall improvement of ORL health of Nigeria has been at the center of concerns of ORLSON.

The year, the keynote address titled. ‘The impact of environmental pollution on Oto-Rhino-Laryngological (ORL) Health’ was presented by Professor Folu E. Ologe FMCORL, FWACS - a professor of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Ilorin and Consultant Otorhinolayngologist, University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital.

The following were the resolutions at the end of the meeting:

l Significant association of environmental pollution with ORL diseases was noted. The impact of wood dust and noise on ORL health of citizens were specifically noted and the need to ensure the use of protective devices (like face mask for wood dust and ear plugs/muffs) for noise should be enforced.

l ORLSON is committed to engaging all stakeholders to curb the menace of environmental pollutants as it affects ORL health of Nigerians.

l ORLSON will partner with all State Governments to enforce legislation against avoidable environmental pollution and provide templates for regulation of environmental pollution.  

l ORL specialty societies will channel their research into environmental pollution and how it affects the ORL specialty areas, seek cooperation with various Governments to support such researches towards prevention and control of environmental pollution as it affects ORL health in Nigeria

l Government should encourage procurement of environmental friendly equipment in all sectors of our national life.

l There is the considered need for ORL societies across the nation to engage more in community ORL services by visiting and providing services in rural areas.
