The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria has raised alarm over the erroneous and illegal employment of Science laboratory technologists in place of Medical laboratory scientists

 

This was contained in a memo obtained by Medicalworld Nigeria with Ref No MLS/SLT/.002/17 and addressed to all State branch Chairmen and Exco members, All National Executive Council (NEC) members, All Service Heads of Medical Laboratories in all hospitals/PHCs/Clinics, All Medical Laboratory Scientists in Nigeria and Reads: 

 

The attention of our association has been drawn to the observed illegal and ugly trend where some Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of Hospitals, Primary Health Centres, Clinics, Ministries of health and other related agencies of federal and some state governments, were massively erroneously and deliberately or mistakenly employing graduates of Science Laboratory Technology (SLT) as Medical Laboratory Scientists. 

 

All National Executive Officers (NE0s), State branch Chairmen and Exco members, NEC members, Service Heads of Medical Laboratory Services in all Hospitals/ Primary Health Centres/Clinics, Medical Laboratory Scientists, Medical Laboratory Technicians and Assistants in Nigeria and the public are hereby informed that this ugly and unprofessional practice has been clarified by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation in May 2013 and compliance has been made by some states of the federation (please see the attachments). 

 

Employing SLT to work in medical laboratories of hospitals, Primary Health Centres, Clinics etc is illegal and a contravention of Act Cap M25 LFN, 2004 (Act 11 of 2003) of Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) and Act Cap N.150, 2004 for SLT (Act 12, 2003). 

 

The letter from the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation and those from some state governments here attached, are sufficient tools for our members where-ever they practice to resist the illegal and ugly practice. 

 

Please communicate this to all relevant authorities where-ever you work and resist the quackery/unprofessional practice. This is one of the ways by which we can strengthen the health systems in Nigeria and eliminate quackery/unprofessional practices in the health sector.
