Communiqué Issued at the End of the 19^th Annual National Scientific Conference of the Association of Hospital and Administrative Pharmacists of Nigeria (AHAPN) ‘LAGOS 2017’ Held from 31st July 2017 to 4th August 2017 at Welcome Centre &Hotels, No 70, International Airport Road, Ajao Estate, Lagos.

Preamble

The Conference began on Monday 31st July, 2017 with health walk embarked upon by the delegates, who walked against drug abuse in recognition of the dangers posed to the society by the consumption and trafficking of illicit substances.

The Conference was declared open by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Akinwumi Ambode who was ably represented by the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Modele Osunkiyesi. The Chairman for the opening ceremony was Professor Fola Tayo MFR.

Other dignitaries that were present at the opening ceremony included the President of Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, Pharm. Ahmed I Yakasai FPSN, who was accompanied by majority of his Executive Committee members; the Registrar of Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, Pharm N.A.E. Mohammed FPSN, ably represented by the PCN’s Director of Public Relations, Pharm Peter Iliya; the Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Osuolale Akiolu ably represented by two Royal Fathers; Commissioner 3, Lagos State Health Services Commission, Otunba Seun Oshinkoya; Commissioner 1, Lagos State Health Services Commission Dr. (Mrs) Monsurat Oyenekan and Commissioner 2, Lagos State Health Services Commission, Dr. (Mrs) Tokunbo Oluwole.

The Conference was well attended by Hospital and Administrative Pharmacists, pharmacists of other areas of practice of the profession, and well-wishers.

The theme of the Conference "Hospital and Administrative Pharmacists and National Development" aptly captured the essence and the importance of the contributions of Hospital and Administrative Pharmacists to the nation’s development.

The Keynote Address was delivered by Pharm. Emmanuel C. Abolo, the Dean, Rova College of Healthcare Executives, Abuja. Other sub-themes included: Drug Abuse: State of the Nation.

RESOLUTIONS

1. Conference identified the abiding need for improvement of value for patients by healthcare providers and stakeholders as a sure way of promoting the health and well being of Nigerians. Consequently, Conference asserted that failure to meet the triple aims of healthcare professions that is, increasing quality of care, reducing cost of care and making services accessible means failure of healthcare professionals. To this end, Conference advocated the need for collaboration and team spirit among the various categories of healthcare professionals in the delivery of healthcare services.

2. Conference resolved that there must be a change towards the value agenda in clinical and business models of practice to guarantee improved delivery of services. To achieve this, Conference solicited the support of government and other relevant stakeholders in the health system.

3. Conference lauded the satellite pharmacy concept initiative as enunciated by the Pharmacists Council of Nigeria and strongly recommended its implementation as a sure way to achieving the provision of high quality pharmaceutical products and services in underserved areas in Nigeria so as to guarantee the realisation of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

4. Conference decried the high level of consumption of illicit drugs and substances as a major factor responsible for crimes and other social vices ravaging the land among the growing population in Nigeria. Conference therefore resolved that to stem this drift, the public, especially the growing population must be continually sensitized on the dangers of drugs and substance abuse.

5. Conference also advocated for proper opioids trailing and accountability in the facilities where opioid substances are prescribed and dispensed, and also the compelling need for the immediate sanitization of the drug distribution system in Nigeria. Conference therefore urged government at all levels, especially the health care providers and the law enforcement agencies to rise up to their responsibilities in this regard.

6. Conference reaffirmed the need for continued and sustained monitoring and reporting of adverse drug reactions to promote medication safety in drug therapy management of patients.

7. The AGM re-elected the following pharmacists to steer the affairs of the Association for the next one year.
